The Summer Reading Challenge 2017 is organised by The Reading Agency charity and is open to all children between the ages of 4 and 11 years across North Yorkshire libraries in Bedale, Easingwold, Great Ayton, Northallerton, Stokesley and Thirsk.

Great Ayton Discovery Centre are taking part in the free to enter Summer Reading Challenge again this year which proved so popular during summer 2016.

The challenge started on Saturday, 15th July and continues until Saturday, 9th September.

The theme for 2017 is Animal Agents, an unlikely cast of animal detectives in hot pursuit of some unusual suspects who have been up to no good at the library! The art work for the challenge has been produced by the award-winning children’s illustrator Tony Ross.

The object of the challenge is to encourage children to read during the school, summer holidays.  Each time they read two books they are awared a set of scratch 'n' sniff stickers to encourage them to carry-on reading more books. The children place the stickers in a booklet handed out at time of registration for the reading challenge. Additional incentives include a bookmark, a fold-out game and an Animal Agents-themed wristband.

On completion of the challenge the children receive an Animal Agents medal and a certificate. The challenge's only rule is the books that are read must be borrowed from the library, but children can choose whatever books they like, including audiobooks and comics.
