Leven Sword are to perform a traditional Plough Monday mummers' play at the Royal Oak
Leven Sword will be performing the traditional Cleveland Fool Plough Play on Plough Monday, 13th January, in The Royal Oak starting at 8:30pm. The play will be followed by a music and song session.
Plough Monday is the traditional start of the English agricultural year and generally falls on the first Monday after the twelfth day of Christmas in the Christian calendar.
Mummers' plays are performed by a group of actors, who were traditionally all male, and refers to a play whereby a number of different characters are called to the stage. The Plough Plays are seasonal and include several performers as Plough-jags, Plough-jacks, Plough-bullocks, Plough-stots or Plough witches.
Two performers always tend to engage in a combat where the loser is revived by a doctor character. Variations of the mummers' plays can be found in many countries all around the world.
A collection will be taken in aid of Cleveland Mountain Rescue Team on the night.
